Malahang Mission Station

The Malahang Mission Station is one of the oldest Lutheran mission sites in Papua New Guinea, located on Busu Road in the Malahang suburb northeast of central Lae. The station is now under the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, and the buildings are a mix of old mission-era structures and newer additions.

For anyone interested in the colonial and missionary history of New Guinea, this is a significant site. The Lutheran missions were among the first European institutions in the Morobe area, arriving in 1886 under German colonial administration, and their influence on language, education, and culture in the region has been immense. The station is not set up as a tourist attraction — you may need to ask permission to look around — but it is a quiet, leafy compound that offers a window into a part of Papua New Guinea's history that most visitors never encounter.

A story
Johann Flierl, the pioneer Lutheran missionary, arrived at Lae in 1886 as one of the first Europeans to settle in what was then Kaiser Wilhelmsland under German colonial rule. The mission network he helped establish shaped Morobe Province profoundly — Lutheranism remains the dominant faith in the region to this day.
