Things to Do

Lae is not a city of grand monuments, but it has a handful of genuinely worthwhile sights — most of them tied to the city's wartime history and its remarkable tropical setting. The Botanic Gardens and War Cemetery are the clear highlights, both walkable from the city centre. Beyond that, the main market is one of the best in Papua New Guinea, and the Markham River valley offers dramatic scenery just outside town.

Security is a real consideration in Lae. Stick to daytime visits, avoid walking alone in quieter areas, and take local advice on which parts of town to avoid.
