When to Go

Madang has a tropical climate with a wet season from December through April, when heavy rain can disrupt diving and outdoor activities. The dry season from May through November offers the best diving conditions: calmer seas, better visibility, and more reliable weather. June, July, and August are generally considered the best months.

The Madang Festival, held in late June, brings together cultural groups from across Madang Province for several days of singing, dancing, and traditional competition. It is one of the largest cultural festivals in Papua New Guinea and worth timing a visit around if possible. Water temperatures are warm year-round (26–28°C), so diving is good outside the wet season regardless of month.
