Practical Information

Currency

The currency is the Papua New Guinea Kina (PGK). ATMs are found in Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, and Mount Hagen but are unreliable elsewhere. Bring enough kina for the areas you plan to visit. US dollars and Australian dollars are sometimes accepted in tourist-facing businesses but do not count on it. Credit cards work at larger hotels and some restaurants in Port Moresby; outside the capital, cash is king.

Language

Tok Pisin (a creole based on English) is the lingua franca and understood almost everywhere. Hiri Motu is spoken in the Gulf and Central provinces. English is official and used in government and business. Only around one to two percent of the population speaks English as a first language, but many people in towns can manage basic English conversation.

Safety

Crime is a serious concern, particularly in Port Moresby and Lae. Violent crime, including armed robbery, carjacking, and assault, is common. Don't walk alone at night, avoid displaying valuables, and take registered taxis rather than walking or flagging down unmarked vehicles. Petty crime is also prevalent in markets and bus stations.

In the Highlands, inter-tribal conflicts periodically escalate. Check current travel advisories before visiting Enga Province and remote Highland areas. The Autonomous Region of Bougainville is generally stable but has its own security dynamics.

Communications

Digicel and Bmobile-Vodafone are the main mobile networks, with reasonable coverage in towns and along main roads. Data is available but expensive. Wi-Fi exists in some hotels and restaurants in Port Moresby.

Electricity

240V, 50Hz. Outlets use the Australian-style angled three-pin plug (Type I).

Opening Hours

Government offices: Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm. Banks: Monday to Thursday, 9am–3pm, Friday 9am–4pm. Many businesses close on weekends.
