Mindimbit

Lower-Middle Sepik village near where the river meets the Chambri channels

Mindimbit sits on the lower end of the Middle Sepik, on the river itself near the cut-off that leads south into the Chambri Lakes. The village is a useful staging point for trips between the Middle Sepik villages and the lake country: by canoe it is a couple of hours to Tambanum downstream or several hours back upstream to Kanganamun.

The men's house here is smaller than those further up but is still in active ceremonial use, with carved ancestor figures and fishing-spear racks lining the interior. The village is a quieter place to spend a night than the busier carving villages, with a clan guesthouse that takes occasional visitors and a long view downriver toward the next bend.
