Cuenca Ancestral House

The Cuenca Ancestral House (Bahay na Tisa) is a well-preserved example of the bahay na bato — the "house of stone" style that characterized elite Filipino architecture during the Spanish colonial period. The structure combines a masonry ground floor (used for storage and sometimes stabling) with a wooden upper floor where the family lived, surrounded by wide windows with shell panes.

The house dates to the 19th century and has been maintained by the Cuenca family descendants. It is one of the few surviving ancestral houses in Bacoor and gives a tangible sense of provincial life before the American period transformed the area. The house can be viewed from the street; visits inside may be arranged by enquiring locally.

A story
The Cuenca family were prominent in 19th-century Cavite, connected to the local principalia class that navigated between Spanish colonial authority and the growing independence movement. The house they built reflects the bahay na bato style — the hybrid Filipino-Spanish architecture that dominated elite provincial construction from the 17th century onward. Houses like this one were the physical expression of a Mestizo elite that was Filipino but also deeply formed by Spanish culture.
