Museo de Baler

The Museo de Baler tells the history of the town and the Aurora province, with the centrepiece being the story of the Siege of Baler — the extraordinary episode in 1898 when a small Spanish garrison barricaded itself inside the Church of Saint Louis of Toulouse and held out for nearly a year after the revolution had already ended elsewhere. The museum occupies a building near the church and displays weapons, documents, and artifacts from the siege and from the broader history of the region.

The adjacent church itself is worth visiting — it is a reconstruction of the original building and contains a memorial to the siege. This is an under-visited piece of history that deserves more attention: the Baler siege is one of the stranger stories to emerge from the Spanish-American War.

A story
The Siege of Baler lasted 337 days — from June 1898 to June 1899 — making it the longest holdout of the entire Philippine Revolution. The Spanish garrison of about 50 soldiers, commanded by Lieutenant Saturnino Martín Cerezo, refused to believe the war was over even after Spain had signed the Treaty of Paris ceding the Philippines to the United States. Their story was later made into a Spanish film, '1898: Los últimos de Filipinas,' in 2016.
