Rizal Monument

The largest statue of José Rizal in the world, at the Calamba city hall

Calamba's modern Rizal monument is a substantial bronze figure of the hero standing in front of the city hall, holding his books. It is impressive both for sheer scale and for the contrast with the small, intimate Rizal Shrine across town: this is the official municipal celebration of Rizal, where the Independence Day ceremonies happen each June.

The plaza around it is well kept, with benches, lawns, and food stalls in the evening. The monument is most striking after dark when it is floodlit.

A story
Unveiled in 2011 for the 150th anniversary of Rizal's birth, the bronze figure stands 6.7 metres tall — taller than the original Rizal Monument on Luneta in Manila. The plinth lists Rizal's writings and academic achievements; the surrounding plaza is a popular evening hangout for Calambeños.
