Daraga Church

Officially the Our Lady of the Gate Parish (Nuestra Señora de la Porteria), Daraga Church is one of the finest baroque churches in the Bicol region and a National Cultural Treasure. It was completed in 1773 by Franciscan friars and survivors of Cagsawa, perched on a hilltop overlooking the town with sweeping views of Mayon Volcano to the north-west.

The facade is carved from volcanic rock in an unusually rich Filipino-Baroque style — saints, scrolls, and floral patterns crowd every surface. The hilltop setting makes it one of the most photogenic churches in the Philippines, especially at sunset when Mayon catches the last light. Free to visit; modest dress is expected.

A story
Daraga Church was built on a hill in 1773 by survivors of the original Cagsawa settlement, who chose the new site for its elevation above future lahar flows from Mayon. The volcanic-stone facade is carved in an exuberant Filipino-Baroque style, and the church is now a National Cultural Treasure.
