Casa de Segunda

Heritage house museum of the 19th-century ilustrado Luz-Katigbak family, with period furnishings

The Casa de Segunda — also known as the Luz-Katigbak House — is a preserved 19th-century ancestral house on Rizal Street in central Lipa, now operated as a heritage museum. It is a fine example of the bahay na bato style, the stone-and-wood hybrid architecture that wealthy Filipino families favoured in the colonial period: stone ground floor for storage and flood protection, wooden upper storey with capiz shell windows for the living quarters.

The interior has been restored with period furniture, decorative objects, and family photographs that give a vivid picture of ilustrado domestic life — the class of wealthy, educated Filipinos who shaped the late 19th-century reform movement. The museum staff are knowledgeable and the house is well-maintained. It is one of the better heritage house museums in the Batangas region and worth an hour of your time if you have any interest in Philippine history.

A story
The house is named for Segunda Katigbak, who was briefly the subject of the young José Rizal's romantic interest in 1877, when Rizal was a 16-year-old student. Rizal noted in his diary that he was captivated by Segunda, though she was already engaged to another man. The connection gives the house a small but enduring place in Philippine literary history.
