Intramuros

Walled Spanish colonial core of Manila, ravaged in 1945, partly restored.

The walled Spanish colonial core of Manila. The walls were 3 kilometres long, 13 metres thick, and 6 metres high; little else survived the 1945 Battle of Manila, when the Japanese occupying force and American bombing between them flattened what had been one of the great Spanish cities of Asia. Today the walls have been partly rebuilt, San Agustin Church (1607) survived the war almost intact, and horse-drawn kalesa ply the tourist loop. Go early; the heat gets heavy by mid-morning.
