Bankerohan is Davao's main public market, a sprawling collection of stalls and vendors that has been the food supply of the city for generations. It is a working market, not a tourist attraction, which is exactly what makes it worth visiting. The produce section is spectacular — tropical fruits in abundance, including the full range of Mindanao exotics like marang, pomelo, rambutan, and of course durian in season.
The seafood section reflects Davao Gulf's richness, with tuna, octopus, and reef fish arriving fresh daily. The market is best in the early morning, from around 6am to 9am, when the wholesale section is active and the freshest produce comes in. Bring a bag — it is easy to spend more than planned.
