Davao is the undisputed durian capital of the Philippines, and the row of stalls along Magsaysay Park near the waterfront is the best place in the city to eat it. The vendors here operate from early morning until late at night, and the fruit is noticeably fresher than anything you will find in Manila or Cebu.
If you have never eaten durian, this is the place. The Puyat variety grown around Davao is considered among the best in the country — less pungent than some Southeast Asian varieties, with a custardy texture and a complex sweetness. The vendors will let you smell before you buy. Durian ice cream, candy, and dried durian chips are available at every stall for those who prefer their first encounter in smaller doses.
