Saint John the Baptist Parish Church

The parish church of Saint John the Baptist stands at the centre of Hinunangan town, as it has since the Spanish colonial period. The current structure dates largely from the 19th century, built in the Spanish colonial style typical of provincial Philippine churches: thick stone walls, a prominent bell tower, and a modest baroque facade.

The church remains an active parish and the focus of town life, particularly during the feast day of Saint John the Baptist in late June. Inside, the carved wooden retablo (altarpiece) is the most notable feature. The plaza in front of the church is where the town gathers, and the view down to the bay from the church steps gives a pleasing sense of Hinunangan's compact geography.
