Hinunangan

Southern Leyte coastal town facing the Pacific, with Tahusan Beach and offshore coral islands

Hinunangan sits on the eastern seaboard of Southern Leyte, facing the Pacific Ocean. It is the largest municipality in the province by number of barangays, and the most compelling reason to come is the coastline: Hinunangan Bay holds Tahusan Beach, a stretch of fine white sand that sees relatively few visitors compared to more famous Philippine beaches. Just offshore, the white coral islands of St Peter and St Paul make a rewarding boat trip.

The town is simple and unpretentious, with fishing the main livelihood. If you are travelling through Southern Leyte looking for undeveloped beach territory, Hinunangan delivers it.

Guide

Getting There

Hinunangan is on the eastern coast of Southern Leyte, accessible by road from Maasin City, the provincial capital, about 90 kilometres to the northwest.

Jeepneys and buses connect Hinunangan to Maasin City and to Sogod. The road is paved but winding through mountainous terrain, so journeys take longer than the distance suggests. There is no airport in Hinunangan; the nearest commercial airport is in Tacloban on the island of Leyte, several hours by road and ferry.
