Jabal Qarah Caves

A sandstone mountain about 12 km northeast of Hofuf, riddled with natural caves that are among the most visited sites in the Al-Ahsa region. The caves stay cool — around 17°C — even when temperatures outside reach 45°C in summer, making them a welcome refuge. The geological formations inside are striking: stalactites, layered rock strata, and narrow passages opening into larger chambers with filtered daylight.

The mountain is part of the Al-Ahsa UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors enter through developed tourist access at the base of the mountain; a path runs through the main cave circuit. The surrounding landscape of date palms, small farms, and the old village of Al-Qarah at the mountain's foot gives a sense of the traditional oasis landscape that has sustained human settlement here for seven millennia. Go in the morning before the day heat peaks.

A story
Jabal Qarah is a sandstone outcrop that was once an island in a Cretaceous sea — the caves inside it are dissolution features formed when the rock was underwater some 65 million years ago. The cave temperatures stay at around 17°C year-round regardless of the desert heat outside, a natural refrigeration that made the mountain a refuge for desert dwellers long before electricity. The name "Judas Caves" attached to them by some early Western travellers is a colonial-era invention with no historical basis.
