Songsan-ri Burial Mounds

The Songsan-ri Burial Mounds are a cluster of Baekje royal tombs west of Gongsan Fortress. The most important is the tomb of King Muryeong, whose intact burial chamber gave historians a rare fixed point in Baekje history and produced some of the finest metalwork found in Korea.

The original tombs are protected, so visitors see the grassy mounds and a replica chamber rather than walking into the real burial rooms. Even so, the site works well because the museum nearby holds the objects that explain why these low green hills matter.

A story
The tomb of King Muryeong was discovered by accident in 1971 during drainage work. Unlike the neighbouring tombs, it had not been looted, so archaeologists found thousands of objects still inside, including gold ornaments and inscribed stone plaques naming the king and queen.
