5.18 Liberty Park preserves another part of Gwangju's democracy landscape. It includes memorial spaces linked to the aftermath of the May 1980 uprising, when citizens were detained, tried, and punished by the military authorities.
The park is less monumental than the national cemetery, but it is easier to fit into a city itinerary. It works best as a companion stop to the Asia Culture Center and the downtown May 18 history sites.
