Asia Culture Center

The Asia Culture Center is Gwangju's main cultural landmark, a large contemporary complex of galleries, performance spaces, archives, plazas, and underground halls. It gives the city a national-scale arts institution right in the old downtown.

The building rewards wandering even when you are not aiming for a specific exhibition. Check the programme before you go, but leave time for the public spaces around the complex and the nearby streets of Geumnam-ro and Chungjang-ro.

A story
The Asia Culture Center was built on the site of the former South Jeolla provincial office, one of the central places in the May 1980 uprising. That makes the complex more than a new arts venue: it sits directly on contested civic memory.
