Deoksugung (Toksu Palace)

Royal palace mixing Korean and Western architecture in central Seoul

Deoksugung (also written Toksu Palace in older romanization) is the smallest of Seoul's five grand palaces, sitting right in the middle of the City Hall district. What makes it unusual is the mix of traditional Korean palace buildings and early 20th-century Western-style stone halls, a result of the turbulent final decades of the Joseon dynasty.

The Changing of the Royal Guard ceremony takes place at the main gate three times daily and draws big crowds. Inside, the Seokjojeon Hall houses the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's Deoksugung branch. The palace's stone-wall road running along its perimeter is one of Seoul's most popular walking paths, particularly in autumn.
