Shin-Jang Shopping District

The Shin-Jang Economic Zone is the commercial heart of Songtan and its most interesting feature. Running through several blocks near the base's main gate, it has a density of tailors, leather goods shops, and clothing stores that cater to servicemembers looking for custom-made uniforms, suits, and leather jackets at prices far below what they would pay stateside.

The tailors are the main draw for civilian visitors too. A made-to-measure suit in good fabric can be completed in 24 hours, and while quality varies between shops, the better establishments produce genuinely good work. The district also has an unusually diverse food scene for a city this size: Korean barbecue restaurants share the street with American-style diners, Filipino restaurants, and taco joints serving the mixed population of the base. Wandering the district is the best thing to do in Songtan.

A story
The Shin-Jang district developed specifically to serve the economic needs of American servicemembers stationed at Osan Air Base — a pattern repeated at many bases across South Korea. Over decades, it became genuinely multicultural: Filipino, Thai, and American businesses set up alongside Korean shops, creating a commercial strip unlike anything else in the Gyeonggi region.
