Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba

Great white 2nd-century BC dagoba, one of Sri Lanka's holiest sites

The great white dome of the Ruwanwelisaya is one of the most recognisable monuments in Sri Lanka. Built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC, it stands 55 metres tall and is revered as one of the sixteen most sacred places in the country. The surrounding courtyard is filled with a ring of elephant statues supporting the base. White-clad pilgrims and the smell of incense fill the precinct at all hours.

A story
King Dutugemunu, who built the Ruwanwelisaya in the 2nd century BC, is said to have died before its completion. His attendants finished construction around him, erecting screens to create the illusion that it was complete so he could die in peace. The dagoba was finished shortly after his death.
