Old Kachcheri Ruins

The ruins of the old British administrative building — the Kachcheri — sit right in the centre of Jaffna, a crumbling colonnaded structure that was damaged beyond repair during the civil war and never rebuilt. The arched verandahs and thick walls recall the city's colonial past; the shell damage and collapsed sections speak to its more recent history.

There is no formal entrance or ticket, and the ruins are freely accessible. They have a strange, melancholy quality — grand enough to suggest what they once were, damaged enough that reconstruction is hard to imagine. Worth a short visit for anyone trying to understand what Jaffna went through during the decades of conflict.

A story
The Kachcheri served as the British administrative headquarters for Jaffna for over a century. During the civil war it became a military strongpoint and was repeatedly shelled. The ruins were left standing rather than cleared after 2009 — a deliberate choice, local guides suggest, as much as an unfinished one. They stand in the middle of the city as an accidental monument to what the conflict cost.
