Ibbagala, or Tortoise Rock, is one of the smaller but most characterful of the animal-shaped outcrops that surround Kurunegala. Its low, rounded profile does indeed resemble a tortoise hunkered down, and it sits close enough to the town centre to be easily reached on foot. The rock has been recognized as an archaeological site, with carved stairs, ancient doorjambs, and scattered ruins attesting to its use as a monastic retreat in the medieval period.
The climb to the top is gentler than Ethagala and takes around 20 minutes. The views are more intimate — looking across the rooftops to the lake and the larger rocks beyond rather than over the whole plain. The Ibbagala Raja Maha Vihara, a cave temple set into the rock's flank, is worth visiting on the way up.
