Polhena Beach

Sheltered reef beach near Matara, popular for calm swimming and turtles.

Polhena Beach sits just west of Matara and is one of the easier south-coast beaches for relaxed swimming. An offshore reef breaks much of the surf, creating a calmer lagoon-like edge than you find on many exposed stretches of Sri Lanka's southern shoreline.

It is a local beach as much as a visitor beach, with families, snack stalls, and fishing boats sharing the scene. Snorkelling can be rewarding when the water is clear, and turtles are sometimes seen close in, though conditions change and the reef deserves careful treatment.
