Matara

Southern Sri Lankan coastal city with Dutch forts, fish markets, and beaches toward Dondra Head.

Matara is a busy coastal city at the southern tip of Sri Lanka, where the old Dutch fort sits on a narrow headland between the sea and the Nilwala River. It is less polished than nearby Galle but has its own appeal — the fort area is atmospheric, the fish market is lively, and it serves as a practical base for exploring the deep south coast.

Just offshore, the tiny island temple of Parevi Duwa is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and makes for a pleasant walk. Across the river, the Star Fort — a perfectly preserved Dutch-era defensive structure — houses a small museum. The beaches east of town toward Mirissa and Dondra Head — the southernmost point on the island — are among Sri Lanka's best, with reliable surf and whale-watching boats in season.

Getting There

Matara is about 160 kilometres south of Colombo along the Southern Expressway (E01), which makes the drive feasible in about two hours — a significant improvement over the old coastal road, which took four or more hours in traffic. Buses on the expressway route run frequently from Colombo and are fast and comfortable.

The train from Colombo along the coastal route is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Sri Lanka, hugging the shoreline for much of the way. The journey from Colombo Fort to Matara takes about three hours on express services. Matara is the current southern terminus of the rail line, though the extension to Beliatta is under construction. Tuk-tuks and local buses connect the train station to the fort area and the town centre.

Things to Do

Matara's main sights cluster in and around the old Dutch fort, which occupies a headland between the sea and the Nilwala River. The Star Fort across the river, the Dutch Reformed Church inside the main fort, and the Matara Bodhiya sacred fig tree are the main heritage attractions. Outside town, Dondra Head to the east — the southernmost point of Sri Lanka — is worth the short trip, and the Parevi Duwa island temple is a pleasant walk from the fort area.
