Polonnaruwa Vatadage

The Vatadage is the architectural masterpiece of the Quadrangle and the most photographed building in Polonnaruwa. A circular reliquary shrine, it consists of two concentric stone terraces with finely carved moonstones, guardstones and balustrades; four seated Buddha statues face out from the inner platform towards the cardinal points; the centre once held a stupa.

The proportions and workmanship are exceptional even for Polonnaruwa, which says a great deal. The whole structure was once roofed, probably in timber and tile, though only the stone foundations and column stumps survive. Climb the steps and walk a slow circuit around the platform; the carving of the doorways and moonstones repays a careful look.

A story
The Vatadage was probably built to house the Tooth Relic of the Buddha — the most sacred object in Sinhalese Buddhism, now kept at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. The relic moved from capital to capital over the centuries, and for two hundred years it sat at the centre of this little circular shrine.
