Weligama Beach

Weligama Beach curves around a sheltered bay, with soft sand underfoot and waves that usually break gently enough for beginners. Surf schools line the road behind the beach, and instructors are easy to find from early morning until sunset.

It is not a pristine hideaway. Fishing boats, buses, surfboards, stray dogs, and beach cafes all share the same strip. That mix is what makes it useful: you can swim, eat, take a lesson, and get back on a bus without leaving town.

A story
Weligama's sandy-bottom waves helped change the south coast surf scene. Travellers who once treated the town as a transit stop began staying for lessons, and the beach filled with board rental shacks rather than the package resorts found elsewhere.
