The Mosque of Khaled Ibn Al-Walid is the most prominent landmark in Homs, named after the Arab military commander who conquered much of Syria and Iraq in the seventh century. The current building dates from the Ottoman period, completed just before the First World War, and features a striking black-and-white striped stone exterior with twin minarets. Inside, the tomb of Khaled Ibn Al-Walid sits beneath a green-draped cenotaph. The mosque suffered significant damage during the Syrian civil war but has since undergone restoration work.
