Souks of Homs

Historic covered markets, heavily damaged in the civil war

The old souks of Homs once occupied a large area in the ancient heart of the city, with covered markets dating from the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods. The area included several historic bathhouses and khans. Much of the old souk was severely damaged or destroyed during the Syrian civil war (2011-2018), when the Old City of Homs saw some of the heaviest fighting. Reconstruction efforts have been underway, but progress is slow. If you are able to visit, what remains gives a sense of the city's long trading history.
