The Citadel

Ancient mound citadel built over the Temple of Baal.

Little remains of this citadel, which was destroyed in the 1830s by Ibrahim Pasha. It stands on a natural mound in the southwestern part of Homs, surrounded by a moat, on the site of the ancient Temple of Baal. The mound itself is off-limits, but the structure played a significant role in the city's history under the Nureddin, Ayyubid, and Mamluk dynasties — the Ayyubids in particular fortified and expanded it.
