Kavalan Distillery sits outside central Yilan in Yuanshan, but it is one of the county's best-known modern visitor stops. Taiwan's warm, humid climate makes whisky mature quickly here, and Kavalan turned that technical fact into an international reputation for single malt.
Tours and tastings are the draw, though even casual drinkers may enjoy seeing how a Taiwanese food-and-drink company built a serious whisky operation in rice-field country. It is easiest by taxi or car from Yilan city, and it pairs well with a wider loop through Yuanshan.
