The best time to visit depends entirely on where you're going.
For the Pamirs and mountain areas, the window is late May to late September. The high passes on the Pamir Highway are typically snowed in from November through April, and some remain difficult into May. July and August are peak season — warm, clear, and busy with overlanders and cyclists. Accommodation in Khorog and along the highway fills up in summer; book ahead where possible.
For Dushanbe and lower-altitude destinations, the comfortable season is April through October. Spring (April–May) brings green hillsides and mild temperatures. Summer in the capital is hot — 35°C and above — but bearable. Autumn is pleasant and the bazaars are piled with fruit.
Navruz (the Persian New Year, March 21) is the country's biggest celebration. If you can time a visit around it, the festivities — music, sports, the preparation of sumalak from sprouting wheat — give a vivid window into Tajik culture. Spring weather at this time is variable but often beautiful.
Winter outside Dushanbe is for the committed only. Roads close, temperatures drop sharply, and many guesthouses in smaller towns shut down. The capital remains functional year-round.
