Loma Park Tsunami Memorial

A small landscaped park at the southern end of Patong's beachfront promenade, with a quiet memorial to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The monument — a stylised wave wall in black marble — carries the names of those who died on Patong Beach and the immediately surrounding streets.

The park itself is a pleasant spot for an evening walk away from the strip, with benches under casuarina trees and a clear view down the length of the beach. It is also one of the marked tsunami evacuation assembly points if you ever hear the warning sirens.

A story
On 26 December 2004 a wave estimated at six metres swept up Patong Beach, killing around 250 people in the town alone. The memorial at Loma Park lists the names of the victims and stands beside the loudspeakers of Phuket's tsunami warning system, tested every Wednesday at 10am.
