Ko Hin-Ngam

The 'island of beautiful stones' — a tiny beach of polished black pebbles, supposedly cursed.

Ko Hin-Ngam — the "island of beautiful stones" — is a tiny outcrop a short longtail ride west of Ko Lipe, and most snorkel tours stop here for half an hour. The entire beach is composed of dark, sea-polished pebbles of every size, gleaming wet at the waterline and clattering musically when waves wash over them. There is no sand at all, and the effect is striking — particularly in late afternoon light.

A short trail leads to a rocky high point with a good view of the surrounding islands. Swimming around the pebble beach is rocky and best done with reef shoes; the snorkelling just offshore over the corals is excellent. Do not pocket any pebbles, even small ones — both the rangers and the curse take it seriously.

A story
Local legend holds that anyone who takes a pebble home from Ko Hin-Ngam will be cursed with bad luck until the stone is returned. Park rangers receive a steady trickle of pebbles posted back to Thailand from around the world by visitors hoping to break the curse. There is a small shrine to **Chao Pho Tarutao**, the spirit of the islands, where stones are now ritually returned.
