The Highland People Discovery Museum is one of Chiang Mai's better places to learn before heading into the hills. Its exhibits introduce the clothing, tools, houses, ceremonies, and changing lives of northern Thailand's highland communities, including groups often flattened into the single phrase "hill tribes."
The museum is especially useful if you are considering a trek or village visit and want more context than a tour brochure provides. It will not replace meeting people respectfully on their own terms, but it does help visitors understand that the region's upland cultures are diverse, modern, and politically complicated.
