World Museum of Insects and Natural Wonders

The World Museum of Insects and Natural Wonders is one of Chiang Mai's most genuinely eccentric attractions — a vast private collection assembled over decades by entomologist Manop Rattanarithikul. Housed in a nondescript building north of the city centre, the museum displays thousands of insects, beetles, butterflies, and specimens from around the world in cases that crowd every wall and surface.

It is not a slick or modern museum. That is entirely the point. The collection reflects one person's obsessive love of the insect world, and the sheer density of specimens is staggering. It's a strange and memorable hour. Kids in particular tend to be transfixed.
