Wat Ton Kwen

Rare wooden Lanna temple southwest of Chiang Mai, also known as Wat Intharawat

Wat Ton Kwen, also called Wat Intharawat, is worth the trip southwest of Chiang Mai for its old wooden Lanna architecture. The temple is small and quiet, with a timber viharn, low roofs, carved details, and a surrounding pavilion that feels far removed from the city's busier temple circuit.

It is best for travellers who already know the major old-city temples and want to see something more rural and architectural. Come respectfully dressed, keep your voice low, and allow time for the slow approach through Hang Dong rather than trying to squeeze it between three central sights.
