Sunrise Coast Beaches

The beaches along Kui Buri's coast are among the quietest on the Gulf of Thailand. They face east across the narrow upper gulf, which means the sea is calm, the waves are minimal, and the sand stretches without the jet ski concessions and sunbed arrangements that crowd the better-known resort beaches to the north at Hua Hin.

The best beaches are accessed via the minor road running south from Kui Buri town toward the district's southern boundary. Hat Laem Sala (also spelled Lamsa) is the most accessible and has a small seafood restaurant cluster. The sand is dark and fine rather than white, which is typical of the upper Gulf coast and does not detract from the swimming. Weekdays are quiet even in peak season; weekends bring more Thai day-trippers from Prachuap Khiri Khan city.

A story
The term "Sunrise Coast" was coined by the local tourism authority to distinguish Prachuap Khiri Khan's eastern Gulf shore from the better-known west-facing beaches of Hua Hin and Cha-am. The designation is accurate: because the Gulf of Thailand is oriented so that the eastern coast faces west, Kui Buri's beaches actually face east — toward the sunrise, not the sunset — which gives the mornings a particular quality of light that west-facing beach resorts never see.
