Afyonkarahisar Castle sits on the dark volcanic rock that gives the city its name. The climb is steep, with hundreds of steps from the old town, but the reward is a wide view over the city and the Anatolian plateau.
The fortifications have Hittite roots and were rebuilt many times. There is not much interpretation at the top, so come for the setting, the walls, and the sense of how the city grew around this crag.
