Grand Mosque

Karamanid-era mosque from 1408, still the main historic landmark in central Aksaray.

Aksaray's Grand Mosque, also called Ulu Cami, dates from 1408 under Karamanoğlu Mehmed Bey. Its detached minaret was added much later, but the prayer hall still carries the sober weight of late medieval Anatolia.

It is the natural starting point for the old centre. From here you can walk to Zinciriye Medrese, the Republican-era civic buildings, and the riverfront around the Red Minaret.
