Sultan Han is one of the great Seljuk caravanserais of Anatolia, built in 1229 on the road between Konya and Aksaray. Its blank outer walls have the air of a fortress, but inside the plan is practical and generous: a large open courtyard, a raised kiosk mosque, service rooms, and a covered winter hall for caravans and animals.
The carved marble entrance is the showpiece, dense with Seljuk geometry and muqarnas. It is worth the drive even if you are not usually moved by roadside monuments, because here the old Silk Road stops being an idea and becomes architecture.
