Zinciriye Medrese

Fourteenth-century medrese with an ornate crown gate, later used as a jail, museum, and library.

Zinciriye Medrese was built in 1336, and its best feature is the carved entrance portal facing east. The building has had several lives: religious school, prison, museum, and now cultural centre and library.

That layered use suits Aksaray. The medrese is not a frozen monument so much as an old civic shell still being put to work. Look at the stonework, then wander the surrounding lanes before heading back towards the mosque.
