Apollon Smintheion

Hellenistic temple site near Gulpinar, tied to Apollo Smintheus and the old Troad.

Apollon Smintheion is a Hellenistic temple site outside Gulpinar, inland from Babakale. The sanctuary was dedicated to Apollo Smintheus, a mouse-linked form of Apollo that appears in the opening of the Iliad.

It is worth pairing with Babakale if you have your own wheels. The remains are not as famous as Assos or Troy, but they give this quiet corner of the Troad a much deeper historical frame.
