Balıkesir Clock Tower

Rebuilt city symbol beside the museum quarter, modelled loosely on Istanbul's Galata Tower tradition.

Balıkesir's clock tower is the city's favourite visual landmark. The first tower was built in the 19th century and destroyed in the 1898 earthquake; the present version was rebuilt in the early 20th century and still marks the centre of town.

It is a quick stop rather than a major monument, but it helps orient a walk through central Balıkesir. The Kuva-yi Milliye Museum is beside it, and Zağnos Pasha Mosque is only a short walk away.
