Red Basilica

Massive Roman red-brick temple complex later reused as a Byzantine basilica and mosque precinct.

The Red Basilica, or Kizil Avlu, is a huge Roman brick complex in the lower town. It was probably built under Hadrian as a temple to Egyptian gods, then later adapted into a Byzantine basilica.

The scale is the shock. The surviving brick walls rise far above the street, and the complex still carries layers of sacred use, including a mosque in one of the rotundas.
