Trojan Horse (from the 2004 film)

The film prop from Wolfgang Petersen's Troy, donated to the city and now on the waterfront

The massive wooden horse on the seafront promenade is one of the city's most photographed objects and, like so many things in Çanakkale, has a slightly absurd backstory. It is not a museum reconstruction of the horse of the Iliad: it is the original prop built for the 2004 Hollywood film Troy, donated to the city by Warner Brothers after the production ended.

That said, it does look the part — towering, weathered, lit at night — and it is hard to walk past without taking a photograph. The plaque sets out the genealogy honestly. A bench beside it is a fine place to sit and watch the ferries cross to Eceabat with Asia behind you and Europe in front.

A story
The wooden horse on Çanakkale's waterfront is not a replica of Homer's horse but the original prop built for Wolfgang Petersen's 2004 film Troy starring Brad Pitt. Warner Brothers donated it to the city after filming wrapped — a fact that mildly irritates classical archaeologists every time it comes up.
