Çankırı Castle crowns the hill above the old town, more viewpoint than intact fortress. The walls and the tomb of Karatekin Bey give the site its historical frame, but the main reward is the view over the city and the dry hills beyond.
Climb in the late afternoon if you can. The streets below the castle are the most atmospheric part of the centre.
