Church of Nicephorus Phocas (Çavuşin Church)

The Çavuşin Church — also known as the Church of Nicephorus Phocas — stands just off the main road at the southern edge of the village. Built into the side of the cliff and hidden behind a rough stone facade, the interior preserves some of the finest tenth-century Byzantine wall paintings in Cappadocia.

The frescoes are unusually clear: cycles of New Testament scenes, processions of saints, and a famous portrait of the emperor Nicephorus II Phocas with his wife, the empress Theophano. A wooden ladder leads up to the entrance, and there is a modest admission fee.

A story
Nicephorus II Phocas, the Byzantine emperor who briefly held the throne from 963 to 969, was born in Cappadocia. He passed through Çavuşin on military campaigns and is depicted on horseback in the wall paintings, making the church one of the few in the region with a confirmed imperial connection.
