Priene

Hillside Greek city site above the Maeander plain, valued for its clear planned street grid.

Priene sits on the south slopes of Mount Mycale, above a plain that was once much closer to the sea. It is quieter than Ephesus and less monumental than Didyma, but it gives one of the clearest walks through a planned Greek city: streets, terraces, theatre, council house, and temple remains are still legible on the hillside.

Wear decent shoes, because the site climbs. The reward is not a single postcard ruin but the feeling of a whole ancient town laid out against mountain and plain.
